Business Trend: PeopleOps

People operations, or PeopleOps, is an HR strategy that puts employees first and focuses on their well-being to drive business results.

If employees are an organization’s most valuable asset, why not treat them that way? That’s the theory behind people operations (aka PeopleOps or POPS), an HR strategy that puts employees first and focuses on their well-being to drive business results. During this period of uncertainty and change, the strategy is gaining renewed attention.

So how is it different than business-as-usual HR?

Traditional HR

  • Enforces compliance and reduces liability
  • Is informed about key management decisions
  • Responds to issues as they arise
  • Narrowly focuses on personnel management and administration of company policies
  • Maintains an employee database and inputs salary increases
  • Hires replacements for vacant positions
  • Works separately from other departments

PeopleOps

  • Maximizes the value of employees
  • Consults with management about strategic decisions
  • Proactively creates systems and programs to improve productivity
  • Takes a holistic view of the business, engaging staff to achieve goals
  • Creates goal-based reward systems to encourage employees
  • Supports the workforce to prevent turnover
  • Connects all departments
