The Essential Workspace Tools for a Busy Small Business Owner

The right workspace tools can help you get organized and ready to tackle the goals and challenges facing your business.

Have you optimized your office for maximum creativity and productivity? The right workspace tool can help you tackle new goals, challenges and seasons with a fresh start.

To give you a few ideas on how to organize your office, consider this advice from a successful, solo business owner:

Find Tools That Inspire

Jennifer Vitale, founder of Celebrated Lady, creates handcrafted clay jewelry for women who want to celebrate themselves.

"Almost all of my inspiration comes from nature," Vitale says. The walls of her home studio are covered with colorful art and prints with inspirational quotes that help get her through the tough moments all solopreneurs face.

A small desk holds her computer at the heart of her office. Her worktable sits next to the desk, along with a salvaged interior door and filing cabinets from thrift stores. "It's usually either covered with clay or beads," Vitale says, "as I'm always making my next piece of jewelry."

Vitale also designed an inspiration station. "I used cork board squares to create a space that changes each season," she explains. "I've created my own little creative safe-haven."

The Importance of Organizational Tools

Vitale works with a variety of tools to create her jewelry. "Each charm and bead are carefully created using my own technique that starts with very thin layers of polymer clay," she says. "To round out my designs, I use natural materials, semi-precious stones and salvaged vintage beads."

These materials allow her to make and create — but what's her ultimate workspace tool? A paper wall calendar. "It keeps me organized and keeps deadlines in perspective," Vitale says, adding that she writes all over it as a physical representation of all her goals.

Vitale also uses supplies like printed business cards, small signs and print promotional materials. "Flyers are a great way of promoting an upcoming event," she says.

Tools That Store Your Office Goods

Vitale works hard to keep her space neat. "When you use a variety of materials like I do, it's important to know exactly where they are and to keep them accessible for easy production," she shares.

Labels and clear containers also help — the translucent bins allow Vitale to quickly see the contents, and labels make it even easier to immediately know what's inside any box. "I can organize my finished jewelry pieces by season, clay by color and beads by shape and size," she explains.

With a well-organized space, Vitale's inspiration can flow freely as she continues to produce her clay jewelry with a dreamy and natural flair.
