The Americans With Disabilities Act establishes standards for how organizations should accommodate people with disabilities. Did you know those rules can also apply to organizations’ websites?
Here’s how to help ensure your website meets accessibility standards, according to business process consultancy KDG:
- Add alt tags to images and label all forms, fields, buttons and controls.
- Make sure the tab key moves the focus to every actionable element on the page.
- Add subtitles and transcripts to videos.
- Avoid using similar colors close together, and nix flashing animation.
- Post an accessibility statement that summarizes the effort to follow ADA guidelines and provides a contact for additional input.
These considerations help those with visual, hearing, colorblindness and seizure impairments. Learn more and get recommendations for accessibility tools at the W3C Web Accessibility Initiative at w3.org/WAI.
